Stop Listening to His Words and Start Watching His Actions

Dating can get confusing when someone knows exactly what to say.

He says he likes you. He says he sees a future with you. He says he’s serious about his faith. He says he’s different from the men you’ve dated before.

And maybe he means every word.

But I’ve learned that words should never carry more weight than actions.

It’s easy to get caught up in what someone says, especially when those words speak directly to something you’ve been praying for. When you want marriage, companionship, and a relationship that honors God, hearing a man say he wants those same things can feel reassuring.

But agreement is not the same as alignment.

Pay Attention to the Pattern

One of the biggest mistakes we can make in dating is judging someone by their intentions instead of their patterns.

He may intend to communicate better.

He may intend to become more consistent.

He may intend to deepen his relationship with God.

He may intend to eventually define the relationship.

But what is he actually doing?

Jesus said in Matthew 7:16, “You will recognize them by their fruits.”

Fruit is evidence.

You don't have to constantly analyze someone's words when their life is already giving you information.

Does he follow through?

Does he make time for you?

Does he communicate consistently?

Does he respect your boundaries?

Does his lifestyle reflect the faith he talks about?

Does he treat people well when there is nothing to gain from it?

Those things tell you far more about a man's character than a beautiful conversation ever could.

Consistency Matters More Than Intensity

I think sometimes we confuse intensity with intention.

Someone can text you all day for two weeks, tell you how amazing you are, talk about everything you could potentially do together—and still have absolutely no intention of building a healthy relationship with you.

Intensity can feel exciting.

Consistency feels different.

Consistency isn't always dramatic. It's someone doing what they said they would do. It's steady communication. It's making plans and keeping them. It's showing interest without constantly leaving you wondering where you stand.

And over time, consistency builds trust.

Stop Filling in the Gaps

This is where discernment becomes so important.

When we really like someone, it's easy to start explaining away the things that don't quite add up.

“He's just busy.”

“He's been hurt before.”

“He's not good at communicating.”

“He told me he's working on it.”

Maybe all of that is true.

But you don't have to turn someone's potential into their present reality.

You can have compassion for where someone is and still recognize that where they are may not be healthy for you.

That's not being judgmental. That's being wise.

Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Guarding your heart doesn't mean building a wall around it. It means being intentional about who gets access to it.

Let His Actions Give You the Answer

You shouldn't have to convince yourself that someone is serious about you.

Give relationships enough time for patterns to develop, and then be willing to believe what those patterns are showing you.

If his words and actions match, that's something worth paying attention to.

But when his words consistently say one thing and his behavior says another, don't keep giving the words the benefit of the doubt.

Listen to what he says.

But watch what he does.

Because eventually, his actions will tell you the truth.
